California Delays Start Date for Heavy-Duty Public Fleet EV Mandate by Several Years
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) unanimously approved changes to its Advanced Clean Fleets (ACF) regulation that will delay its implementation until 2030.
Under ACF, the state must ensure that electric vehicles (EV) comprise all new vehicle purchases for state-owned heavy-duty vehicle fleets. This rule was originally slated to go into effect in 2027. The amended rule pushes that date to 2030. It also creates more flexible exemptions that make it easier for fleets to acquire internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles under certain conditions.
California lawmakers decided to change the rule in response to concerns that emergency-response agencies and local utilities would not be able to find EVs to replace older specialty vehicles.
