DEKRA’s 2025 Roadway Safety Report Says ADAS Increases the Need for Periodic Safety Inspections
DEKRA--a Europe-based automotive testing, inspection, and certification company--released its Road Safety Report 2025, which it has titled, "Changing the Face of Mobility." The report asserts that innovation in the automotive sector has significantly improved roadway safety. However, new technologies present new safety challenges.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles (AV) represent two such technologies. DEKRA argues in its report that ADAS and AV technologies "must function reliably throughout the vehicle's life," which periodical technical inspections (PTI) help ensure. These inspections "will therefore become even more important in the future than they already are today - given the higher complexity of vehicle systems and the risk of electronic manipulation."
The World Health Organization agrees. In its 2023 "Global Status Report on Road Safety," it listed--for the first time--vehicle safety inspections as "one of the main measures for reducing the risk of being injured or killed on the road."
DEKRA's report also examined vehicle data access. Given the increased use of telematics, the report calls on governments to, "require direct, unfiltered, and non-discriminatory access to the vehicle’s original (i.e., unchanged) safety and environmental data."
ASA supports laws that increase roadway safety through vehicle safety inspections.
