Hearing in U.S. House Held on Autonomous Trucks

On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, held a hearing on autonomous heavy-duty vehicles. Elected officials on the committee heard testimony from and asked questions directed towards the following witnesses:

  • Chris Urmson, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Aurora Innovation, Inc.
  • Jeff Farrah, Executive Director, Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association
  • Chris Spear, President and Chief Executive Officer, American Trucking Associations
  • Cathy Chase, President, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety

Witnesses and committee members discussed the current and future impacts of autonomous heavy-duty vehicles on safety, the economy, and other relevant areas. Lawmakers are trying to determine the proper regulatory framework for this technology. This hearing follows a July House Energy and Commerce hearing dedicated to light-duty autonomous vehicle technology, for which slightly further progress has been made in efforts to draft legislation that would create a federal regulatory system.
