NHTSA Releases Reporting Requirement for Autonomous Vehicles

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) released an order on Tuesday requiring all manufacturers and operators of autonomous vehicles to report crashes to the agency. This requirement will force manufacturers of autonomous vehicles, such as Tesla, to send information regarding crashes to the government. This information has previously been withheld or has been difficult to obtain.

This order will help NHTSA to regulate the release of autonomous vehicles and identify potential problems with these vehicles to make them safer in the future. Consumer groups have also urged NHTSA to make these reports public as much as possible, so the general population can be aware of the risks and development of AVs as well.
