Final Rule Published on State Failure to Submit Ozone Emissions Plans
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) published a final rule yesterday after finding many states failed to
submit state implementation plans (SIPs) as required by the EPA’s 1997 Eight-hour
Ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). The EPA originally
set a June 15, 2007, deadline for SIP submission. For more info, click here.
In related news, the EPA announced March 12 that it will limit the allowable amount of pollution-forming ozone in the air to 0.075 parts per million. At the EPA recommended level, the agency believes 345 counties will not meet the ozone standard and will be officially classified nonattainment in 2010. Counties have three years to develop plans to meet the standard but 20 years to comply. To see the counties impacted by the new ozone standard, click here.
