Nevada Salvaged Vehicles Act Passes Senate, Assembly

ASA Urges Governor to Veto Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 27, 2009 - The Automotive Service Association (ASA) has urged Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons, in a letter, to veto Nevada Senate Bill 360, the Salvaged Vehicles Act, because it is anti-consumer and not in the best interests of the collision repair industry. The Salvaged Vehicles Act revises provisions governing the sale and title of salvage vehicles.

Specifically, this bill authorizes persons other than licensed automotive professionals to purchase vehicles from salvage pools.

The Automotive Service Association opposes the legislation. The bill raises significant issues:

• It will allow potentially unsafe vehicles on Nevada's highways.

• It will allow untrained, ill-equipped and unregulated individuals to purchase these vehicles and attempt to repair or dismantle the vehicles.

• Unregulated purchasers of these vehicles will threaten the environment with the handling of hazardous materials.

• It will encourage automotive theft via vehicle identification number (VIN) switching.

S.B. 360 has been passed by the Nevada Senate and Assembly, and will become law if Gibbons signs the bill. ASA encourages collision repairers in Nevada to contact Gibbons' office and ask that the governor veto S.B. 360.
