Stimulus Package Might Include Cash For Clunkers Program
ASA Calls on Repairers to Contact Congress in Support of a Repair Option
WASHINGTON, D.C., January 8, 2009 - With the 111th Congress returning to Capitol Hill after the holidays to debate an economic stimulus package that may include automotive provisions, the concept of a fleet modernization program is receiving more attention from policymakers. Princeton University's Dr. Alan Blinder, in a New York Times article published earlier in 2008, referred to this policy option as "Cash for Clunkers": government payments to remove older, less-fuel-efficient or high-polluting vehicles from America's highways.
If Congress, in economic stimulus legislation, opts to include a fleet modernization program, the Automotive Service Association (ASA) has asked Congress to consider the following important points:
• Include a vehicle repair option for consumers.
• Programs should be administered by the states
• Vehicle participation should be tied to emissions and improving air quality.
• Repair cost allowances should be sufficient to address emissions repairs.
ASA is calling on independent automotive repairers to contact their congressional representatives in the U.S. House and Senate to encourage support for a repair option if Congress enacts a Cash for Clunkers program.
To send a letter to Congress on the Cash for Clunkers issue, please visit the "View Current Alerts" section at ASA's legislative Web site, www.TakingtheHill.com.
