Michigan Insurer-Owned Shop Bill
Passes House Committee
WASHINGTON, D.C., November 13, 2008 - Michigan House Bill 4778, the insurer-owned repair shop legislation, has passed the Michigan House of Representatives Committee on Insurance. The Automotive Service Association (ASA) has been working with ASA-Michigan for passage of this legislation for some time.
"We are very pleased the committee has passed this important piece of legislation. Collision repairers across Michigan have worked for a long time to achieve insurer-owned shop legislation. ASA commends the committee for drawing a clear line in defense of the Michigan motoring public and the small business community," said Bob Redding, ASA's Washington, D.C., representative.
The bill prohibits insurance companies from owning repair facilities in Michigan.
Redding continued, "We need Michigan repairers to contact their representatives encouraging that they support House Bill 4778 when it is considered on the floor of the House." Michigan shops can go to www.TakingTheHill.com to contact their legislators.
An amendment was accepted to the legislation that prohibits insurers from developing a list of preferred shops or in any other way conveying to insured vehicle policyholders information regarding which repair facility they should use for vehicle repairs.
The Automotive Service Association is the largest not-for-profit trade association of its kind dedicated to and governed by independent automotive service and repair professionals.
