Arizona Regulatory Council Approves Clean Car Rules
Super Warranty Excluded
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 8, 2008 - The Governor’s Regulatory Review Council (GRRC) voted this week to approve the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality’s (ADEQ) proposed rules to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from automobiles and other passenger vehicles. This council is required to review all state regulations before they become law.
The new Clean Car rules will reduce GHG emissions from passenger cars and light trucks by 37 percent by 2016. The rules were developed after Gov. Janet Napolitano issued an executive order in September 2006. The Arizona Climate Change Advisory Group (CCAG) unanimously recommended that Arizona adopt the Clean Car standards to reduce Arizona GHG emissions. The Clean Car rules will apply to vehicles beginning with the 2012 model year. The rules cannot go into effect, however, until the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grants approval for the California waiver.
ASA has praised ADEQ for its exclusion of the 15-year / 150,000-mile emissions component warranty. This has been a top priority for ASA-Arizona, as well as other ASA affiliate groups nationwide that are monitoring the effect these regulations may have on ASA member businesses and the consumers they serve. ASA hopes to continue working with ADEQ to continue improving air quality in Arizona.
