EPA Amends Hazardous Waste Rule
Rule Encourages More Aluminum Use in Cars
WASHINGTON, D.C., July 7, 2008 – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has amended Hazardous Waste rule No. F019 to encourage use of aluminum in automobile construction. This final rule, which became effective today (July 7), applies to wastewater treatment sludge produced when manufacturing aluminum.
Specifically, the amendment modified the scope of the rules on EPA Hazardous Waste No. F019, which lessened the requirements for the disposal of certain manufacturing byproducts. This will make the use of aluminum less burdensome for automobile manufacturers. The EPA amended this rule to encourage the use of aluminum parts, which will produce lighter vehicles capable of increased gas mileage and decreased emissions.
To view the final rule, visit ASA’s legislative Web site, www.TakingTheHill.com. EPA Hazardous Waste No. F019 can be found in the “Press Center” under “References and Bills.”
