Right to Repair Legislation Fades in Another State

ASA Applauds Oklahoma Repairers for Stopping Right to Repair Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 24, 2007 - Oklahoma state House Bill 1584, the Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act, has died in the Oklahoma legislature. The bill was introduced and assigned to the House Rules Committee Feb. 6, 2007. It failed to move through the committee process and did not reach the House for a vote during this session.

Oklahoma's H.B. 1584 would have regulated how automotive service information is provided. Additionally, the legislation would have made a state government agency responsible for administering automotive service information and establishing monetary penalties and legal remedies.

The Automotive Service Association (ASA) believes such legislation would interfere with the voluntary, industry-supported service information process already in place that protects independent repairers and consumers. Specifically, the National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) already accommodates for the identification and correction of gaps involved in the access of automotive service information, diagnostic tools and equipment, and training. In addition to third-party providers, independent repairers have access to automaker Web sites to obtain service information.

ASA encouraged Oklahoma repair shop owners to contact their state House members, urging them to oppose H.B. 1584, and the association commends them for doing so.

Oklahoma now joins Florida as a state unable to move forward with proposed Right to Repair legislation. It is the hope of the Automotive Service Association that other states will join to oppose this legislation.
