ASA Urges All Oklahoma Repairers
to Contact State Legislators, Oppose Right to Repair

WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 20, 2007 - The chairman of the Automotive Service Association (ASA) has contacted Oklahoma automotive repairers, urging them to oppose Oklahoma House Bill 1584, the Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act.

ASA Chairman Charlie Elder, in a letter to Oklahoma independent automotive repairers, asked that shop owners contact their state representatives requesting their opposition to this unnecessary legislation.

The Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act would put at risk the progress that has been made through the Automotive Service Association-Automaker Agreement, which already provides independent repairers timely access to service, tool and training information via automaker Web sites.

Oklahoma House Bill 1584 would place the burden on a state government agency and the courts to assist repairers in acquiring automotive service information. ASA, as well as other segments of the auto industry, supports the voluntary National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) and its effort to ensure repairers service information, tools and training.

NASTF, www.nastf.org, was established to facilitate the identification and correction of gaps in availability and accessibility of automotive service information, service training, diagnostic tools and equipment, and communications for the benefit of automotive service professionals. NASTF is a voluntary, cooperative effort among the automotive service industry, the equipment and tool industry, and automotive manufacturers.

A number of Oklahoma independent repairers have already contacted their representatives expressing opposition to OK H.B. 1584. ASA wants to make sure legislators are informed as to the Right to Repair bill's impact on small business.

Right to Repair legislation has failed on the federal level in the past several congresses. Proponents of Right to Repair legislation have now moved to the state level.

To view the language of the Oklahoma bill in its entirety or to send a letter to your state representative asking for opposition to OK H.B. 1584, visit ASA's legislative Web site, www.TakingTheHill.com.

The Automotive Service Association is the largest not-for-profit trade association of its kind serving an international membership base that includes numerous affiliate, state and chapter groups from all segments of the automotive service industry. ASA's headquarters is in Bedford, Texas.

ASA advances professionalism and excellence in the automotive repair industry through education, representation and member services. For additional information about ASA, including past news releases, go to www.asashop.org, or visit ASA's legislative Web site at www.TakingTheHill.com.
