CARS 2004 to Offer Timely Technical Courses Taught by Experienced InstructorsProgram

BEDFORD, TEXAS, Aug. 5, 2004 - The Automotive Service Association (ASA) has announced the technical course lineup for the Congress of Automotive Repair and Service (CARS). CARS has a strong tradition of offering the best in technical training taught by the nation's leading instructors. "Feel the Power" is the theme for this year's event, which will be held Nov. 4-6 at the Flamingo Las Vegas.

CARS 2004 will include the following technical courses.

  • Developing Diagnostic Strategies with Exhaust Gas Analysis: Glenn Young, AAM, CARQUEST Technical Institute, will help techs and shop owners develop diagnostic strategies with exhaust gas analysis.
  • Ford 7.3L Powerstroke Diagnostics: Mike Cleary, Automotive Technical Support Services, will teach students how to quickly and efficiently diagnose and repair the electronic engine control system of the Ford 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel engine.
  • GM's All-Wheel and Four-Wheel Drive Controls: Ralph Dahlen, Identifix, will deliver a popular General Motors technical course on front axle controls and all-wheel/four-wheel drive transfer case controls.
  • "It's All About Spark?" Today's Ignition and Fuel Control: Jim Linder, Linder Technical Services, will explore the diagnostic difficulties presented by the new ignition and fuel controls required by today's improved combustion engines. This class will cover advanced test procedures using a lab scope and low-current probe as a nonintrusive method of testing these systems.
  • Mode 06 Diagnostics: John Forro, Automotive Service Technology, will present an advanced OBD II diagnostic class that will review Mode 06 data, ensuring confident and profitable emission failure repairs in the future.
  • You Have the Right to Repair: ASA's own Bill Haas, AAM, will present an interactive session sponsored by the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers and the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. "You Have the Right to Repair" takes participants inside the OEM service information Web sites and arms them with the many information tools available today. (Attendees are eligible to receive six Automotive Management Institute credits for this course.)
  • Work Smarter by Being Smarter: Jorge Menchu, AES, will teach students how to work smarter by being smarter through exercises designed to enhance self-learning and analytical skills.

In addition to the seven technical courses being offered at CARS, OEM New Product Technology Sessions will be provided Thursday, Nov. 4, by Ford, Honda, GM, Isuzu, Volkswagen, DaimlerChrysler and Toyota. CARS also will offer three management courses, a legislative update by Bob Redding, ASA's Washington, D.C., representative; and a keynote presentation by John G. Miller, acclaimed author and organizational development speaker.

CARS registration is being handled online this year. Attendees can save $100 with the early-bird discount when they register by Monday, Sept. 27. Registration includes credentials to the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo (AAPEX) and the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) shows, as well as ASA's International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE), all being held during Automotive Aftermarket Industry Week.

Steve Louden, AAM, owner of Louden Motorcar Services in Dallas, is chairman of CARS 2004.
