Engine Mechanical Testing with Electronic Methods
Instructor: John Thornton
Saturday, Aug. 23 - 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
(morning and afternoon sessions)
Today, engine vacuum transducers and in-cylinder pressure transducers are changing how technicians evaluate the mechanical condition of an engine. This two-part class will discuss how electronics have changed the mechanical testing of a gasoline engine.
In the morning session, Thornton will discuss cranking current testing and in-cylinder pressure transducer testing. Most of the class time will be spent on interpreting cranking compression patterns and running compression patterns using an in-cylinder pressure transducer.
The afternoon session will briefly discuss cranking vacuum testing with a plugged (sealed off) throttle body. Most of the class time will be spent on interpreting cranking vacuum patterns and running vacuum patterns using a vacuum transducer.
Technicians attending this class will learn how to analyze and interpret these information filled patterns. The use of these techniques can save a tremendous amount of diagnostic and teardown time.
A detailed handout will be provided to all students.
