Traveling by automobile from Chicago to Los Angeles takes about 36 hours for the average motorist. While this is certainly a time-consuming trip, the same trek 40 years ago was about 17 hours longer than today's trip. Much of this considerable improvement in traveling efficiency can be attributed to the construction of the Interstate Highway System, which was first created 40 years ago via legislation signed by President Eisenhower.

The Interstate Highway System allows motorists to travel across the country without stopping for a single traffic light. This system is used for nearly 25 percent of all automotive traveling, despite the fact that it accounts for only 1 percent of all roads in the U.S.
