iATN TechNight Is Online Classroom

Every Tuesday at 7 p.m., Pacific Standard Time, automotive service professionals meet online to participate in TechNight, a moderated, live conferencing event hosted by the International Automotive Technicians' Network (iATN). This virtual classroom allows the exchange of technical information in real time on specific topics. It's common for vehicle manufacturer and government agency representatives to join discussions when topics focus on specific vehicles, new designs and government regulations.

TechNight topics are announced in advance on iATN's Technical Theory Forum, giving technicians time to prepare for the discussion and gather supporting waveforms and images to upload to the online group. Past topics have included scan data analysis, ignition systems, diagnostic challenges, fuel system diagnosis, heavy line issues, pressure transducers for diagnostics and air conditioning service.

To participate, iATN membership is required. For more details, visit www.iatn.net. TechNight transcripts are archived on the iATN Web site after each event.

Starter, Alternator Market Growing

As the automotive industry continues to experience high sales, car owners are using their vehicles for shorter and more frequent trips, causing engine components to wear out quickly and increasing aftermarket demand for starters and alternators.

According to analysis by Frost and Sullivan of the North American starter and alternator aftermarket, the total market reached an estimated $1.48 billion in 2000 and is expected to increase to $1.66 billion in 2007.

Frost and Sullivan offers international strategic market consulting and training.

NGA, NAII Participate in NACE

The International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE) educational conference will have first-time participation from the National Glass Association (NGA) and the National Association of Independent Insurers (NAII).

Both groups will offer seminars. NGA will offer “Protect Yourself from Auto Glass Liabilities,” and NAII will host “Insurers and Auto Repair: A Complex Relationship.”

In addition, the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) will administer its collision repair certification tests during the show. Also new this year, many of the sessions in the NACE management track courses will earn credit toward the Automotive Management Institute's Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM) designation.

NACE will be held Nov. 29-Dec. 2 in Las Vegas.
