A Crash Course in Collision StatisticsPosted 9/12/2000By Denise Caspersen
Did you know that an estimated 21.5 percent of registered vehicles are involved in collisions each year? Of that total, 7 percent of the cars and light trucks are totaled, 26 percent will not be repaired and 67 percent head for collision shops for repair. So, what does that look like in numbers? The estimated number of registered cars and light trucks in the United States is 215,794,435 for 2000, giving an estimated 46,395,803 vehicular accidents this year. Of those near 46.5 million accidents, 3,247,706 cars and light trucks will wind up totaled. Accidents happen, but not all accidents are repaired. Approximately 12,062,908 fender benders will keep on rolling without visiting a collision repair facility. On the bright side, more than 31 million vehicles involved in collisions are bound for the collision repair facilities. That's an engaging number of accidents for collision facilities to repair. I've placed the percentages at the top of this article in hopes that these numbers can be applied to your business at the local level. ASA has the ability to determine an estimated number of registered vehicles on a county level.
