ASA-Oregon to Pursue Shop Licensing
The ASA-Oregon board of directors has voted to pursue shop licensing for any business that performs motor vehicle repairs for a fee. Rick Allison, ASA-Oregon vice president, said, We have responded to two-thirds of our membership that believe shop licensing should be required for the auto service industry. The board's decision comes after a comprehensive statewide membership survey that asked members for their input in 10 different areas including repair authorization, requirements for repair orders and specific education requirements. The legislation would include, but not be limited to, automotive, collision and transmission repair shops. The affiliate's shop licensing committee has been working on this issue for more than six months. After Allison presented the committee's research and survey results, Susan Ferguson, AAM, collision division chairperson, made a motion to take the committee's licensing draft to legislative counsel and then introduce it during the 2001 legislative session.
I believe the membership sent us a message that they want to establish a standard for our industry as well as level the playing field. I also feel very confident that ASA-Oregon will act responsibly on behalf of the industry throughout the legislative process, said Denis Renaud, AAM, ASA-Oregon president.
