News Briefs Canadian Government Honors ASA Member
For the third time in 12 months, Kelly Auto Body of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, has been recognized for its environmental efforts. The most recent honor, the 1996 Canadian Healthy Environment Award, recognized their comprehensive program to recycle used solvents, waste products, paint cans and oil filters. Prime Minister Jean Chrétien met two employees of the family-owned business at the award presentation.Other honors include a regional Environmental Commitment Award for environmental responsibility and the provincial Pollution Prevention Achievement Award for Kelly Auto Bodyís 80 percent reduction in washing solvent wastes.
"In addition to cutting costs, recycling has enhanced our public image," said Seamus Kelly, sales and promotions representative. Other benefits include improved business contacts and idea sharing within the industry, said Kelly.
Using a regional recycling program for paper, cardboard, glass and some plastics has led Kelly Auto Body to a 25 percent reduction in landfill waste and associated costs. Money saved through recycling programs is used to create new programs and enhance existing ones.
Alternative Fuels Training Programs Enderway
The National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) has completed three one-day alternative fuels vehicle (AFV) technician training program certification workshops and plans nine more by the end of 1996. The Automotive Service Association Management Institute (ASAMI) has announced the recipients of two collision industry awards. Four collision repair professionals were selected to receive the Emil Stanley Merit Award to recognize their commitment to management education. Recipients are: Maurice Batista, Drew Brothers First Autobody, Tampa, Fla.; Johnny and Mary Dickerson, Dickersonís Collision Repair Service, Garland, Texas; and Charlie Gholson, Collision Specialists, Houston, Texas. Award winners receive air transportation to the International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE), hotel accommodations, NACE registration and ASAMI seminar tuition. The BodyShop Business Magazine Scholarship has been awarded to Mark L. Boutwell, Boutwell Collision Center, Findley, Ohio. The $1,000 scholarship awarded by ASAMI in conjunction with Babcox Publications will be applied toward expenses to attend NACE on Nov. 7-10 in Orlando, Fla.PPG Facilities Receive ISO 9001 Certification
PPG Automotive manufacturing facilities have been awarded ISO 9001 certification, a worldwide standard for ensuring quality in all industries. ISO 9000 standards are set by the International Organization for Standardization and specify quality systems to be established by manufacturing and service firms. Certification was awarded to three facilities in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Canada, which manufacture the majority of automotive refinish products sold to PPG distributors and collision repair centers in North America.I-CAR Education Foundation Names Director
In early September, Mark J. Claypool of St. Charles, Ill., began his role as the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) Education Foundation executive director. He succeeds Gene Klompus, who is retiring. Claypool has 13 years of management and fund-raising experience in the not-for-profit sector. He holds a bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Illinois and a professional certification in fund-raising.FedWorld's Index To Hit Web In October
The National Technical Information Service (NTIS) plans to have its on-line "clean air act compliance" system available on the FedWorld Web site early this month. The on-line compliance system, which is an index to emissions repair information available from various carmakers, began in December 1995 via FedWorldís direct-dial electronic bulletin board. The user-friendly Web version will have a search feature and plans call for placing the index under the "FedWorld-Hosted Web Sites" heading of the FedWorld main page (http://www.fedworld.gov). An FTP site and Telnet access to the bulletin board will continue to be available.
