CARS 2007, "The Meeting Place for Automotive Service and Repair Professionals"

Posted 10/8/2007

Meet Our Keynote Speaker: Jones Loflin

Jones Loflin, president of Helping Others Prepare for Excellence, will be the keynote speaker for the Congress of Automotive Repair and Service (CARS). Known as "The Speaker With Two Last Names," Loflin will use his dynamic communication skills and enthusiasm to deliver an exciting, enlightening program.

Loflin will share with CARS attendees key strategies from the book, "Juggling Elephants?," which he co-authored. Attendees will learn how to focus on being more productive in their professional and personal endeavors, as this presentation will be packed with meaningful examples and humor that can only come when everyday situations are compared to a circus.

"My objective is to provide individuals in attendance with a blueprint to increase their focus and productivity, but also to get more of the things done that are most important to them professionally and personally," said Loflin.

As an educator, business owner and speaker for more than 11 years, Loflin has created and conducted training programs for groups ranging from international corporations and trade associations to governmental agencies and educational institutions.

"I have read 'Juggling Elephants?' and cannot wait to see Jones Loflin in person," said Robbie Addison, ASA Mechanical Division manager. "His book is entertaining and packed with information about dealing with the struggle to keep your life in balance. I jump from one thing to another in my office, so I can only imagine how it would be to walk in one of our member's shoes for just a day. In my opinion, CARS attendees will benefit greatly from his presentation."

The Flamingo Las Vegas: So Much Under One Roof

As CARS returns to the Flamingo Las Vegas, so do many former attendees who may not remember what all this hotel and casino has to offer. Below are just a few offerings that can be found within steps of your hotel room.

Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville

The multilevel entertainment venue offers two outdoor patios overlooking the Las Vegas Strip, a tropical-themed restaurant, five distinctive bars, live entertainment nightly (both indoors and outdoors) and a 3,000 square-foot retail store. From the moment guests enter Margaritaville, they are greeted with the sights and sounds of a festival-like atmosphere. Stilt-walkers roam throughout the establishment, creating Parrothead balloon hats for guests while hand-painted Adirondack chairs invite guests to relax with a refreshing margarita and search the restaurant for references to their favorite Buffett songs.

Hamada of Japan

At an authentic Japanese dining experience, guests can enjoy a sushi bar and a cocktail lounge where deep-fried tempura, sushi and some of the best sake in town are to be found along with chilled Japanese beer. Sushi selections range from the delicious California roll to the more traditional uni or sea urchin. Knife-wielding chefs also prepare steaks, shrimp, lobster and marinated chicken to the enthusiastic delight of diners. In characteristic Japanese fashion, the dishes are presented so as to be a feast for the eyes as well as for the palate.

Ventuno Ristorante, Cafe and Bar

"Ventuno" (Italian for "21"), a spacious and intimate setting, features fresh ingredients, homemade pastas, a variety of fresh seafood and light, flavorful sauces. For a more casual dining experience, Ventuno Cafe is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night snacks. The menu offers a variety of antipasto salads, wood-fired gourmet pizzas, light pasta dishes and freshly prepared Italian pastries. Ventuno Cafe adjoins the promenade overlooking the Flamingo's beautiful tropical gardens.

The Pool Area

The pool area of the Flamingo Las Vegas is a tropical oasis of four pools accented by brightly colored flowers and dozens of varieties of leafy palms. Complimentary towels and lounge chairs are provided to all guests. Cabana rentals are available for full and half days, and include bottled water, juices, sodas, television with cable, telephone and changing room. The complex also features a seasonal poolside restaurant known as the Flamingo Beach Club Cafe.

The Wildlife Habitat

Flamingo Las Vegas belongs to the Species Survival Program, affiliated with the American Zoos, Parks and Aquariums association. The program's management group plans future generations of African penguins after comparing the genetics of those held in zoos around the world, with the goal of maintaining a genetically diverse and strong population. African penguins are a "threatened" species, which is one step away from the "endangered" rating. Flamingo now has 13 African penguins.

Other inhabitants of the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat include a flock of Chilean flamingos, mute swans, black-necked swans, Australian black swans, Gambel's quail, African crowned crane, pheasants, helmeted guineas, swans, several varieties of ducks, Japanese koi fish, grass carp, sacred ibises, macaws, cockatoos, chub minnows, albino channel catfish and water turtles, all of which are carefully tended to by experts and live on islands and streams.

For more information on events, eateries and shows located in the Flamingo Las Vegas, visit www.flaminolasvegas.com.

"I have attended most CARS events since the very first one in New Orleans in May 1985. The different seminars have been instrumental in the success of our business over the past 30 years. The networking has been priceless, and I have made numerous friends from around the country who manage successful businesses. I always come home with at least one idea that pays for the trip and always make important industry contacts. I wouldn't miss it."
- Steve Louden, AAM, Dallas, Texas

Networking at the CARS Exhibitor Showcase

How can you make the most of networking at the CARS Exhibitor Showcase? Robbie Addison, ASA's Mechanical Division manager, has been organizing the Congress of Automotive Repair and Service (CARS) since 1998 when the showcase first got started. She has these tips to share for getting the most out of your exhibitor showcase experience at CARS:

  1. Pack business cards. Don't leave home without your business cards. People may forget to pack or bring their business cards with them, said Addison, but they are a requisite if you're wanting to leave information with a vendor and have them contact you after the show or even if you want to enter your name into a drawing for a special prize. If you don't have professionally printed cards, you can go to an office supply store and purchase a box of pre-perforated cards that you can run through most desktop or laser printers and print your own cards. It's that easy.

  2. Do your homework. Review the list of this year's exhibitors and then make a list of the companies you want to visit. When you receive the CARS program booklet, study the floor plan of the Exhibitor Showcase and map out the booths you want to visit. "It helps to prioritize your list of companies," said Addison.

  3. If you attend the showcase with a friend, colleague, buddy or co-worker, consider splitting up so that you can cover more ground. Afterwards, you can meet up again (maybe over dinner) and share notes and information about the exhibitors and their products and services.

  4. Practice booth etiquette. It's the little things that count. For instance, since the showcase features a buffet dinner, leave the food at the table and don't bring it into the booth. Also, be polite and wait your turn if there is a line at a particular booth. Don't interrupt others when they're talking. Wait for a break or pause in the conversation or discussion before speaking. It may sound like kindergarten, but you would be surprised at how often people throw their manners out the window when they're in a group setting or waiting in line.

Get the D.C. Update

On Saturday, Nov. 3, from 7-8 a.m., join Bob Redding, ASA's Washington, D.C., representative, for a continental breakfast and an update on the latest legislative information impacting your business and your industry. Redding will provide an update on these issues:

  • Super Warranties
  • Emissions Testing
  • Right to Repair
  • Energy and Global Warming Legislation

Service Professionals Industry Reception

Officially opening CARS 2007 will be Thursday evening's Service Professionals Industry Reception from 6 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Enjoy an evening of meeting and visiting with other shop owners, managers and technicians, just like yourself. Learn new "tricks of the trade" while you mingle with peers and enjoy the light-hearted camaraderie of your fellow shop owners. Also, more than 60 exhibitors will be on hand showcasing the newest technologies available to automotive service professionals and to answer any questions you may have about new products and services. Sponsored by iatn and ASA.

ASA, EPA To Bring OE Tools Forum to Industry Week

The Automotive Service Association has announced an informational session preceding the opening of the Congress of Automotive Repair and Service (CARS). The OEM Tool Forum will be co-sponsored by ASA and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This educational session will provide attendees with an opportunity to learn about several OE tools directly from the manufacturer.

The session will be offered Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Flamingo Las Vegas in the El Dorado Ballroom. Although the program agenda is still being developed, BMW, Subaru and Toyota are currently expected to participate. The association is anticipating confirmation from at least one other automaker to participate in the event.

Each automaker will make a presentation or perform a live demonstration of the capabilities of its diagnostic tool. They will also provide information regarding tool purchases or leases, and hardware and software support. Time permitting, the presenters will take questions from the audience.

This informative session is open to everyone and no registration is required.

"There tends to be misinformation in the industry regarding diagnostic tool availability and support. I encourage anyone who performs any type of diagnostic work to attend the OEM Tool Forum and learn firsthand from the vehicle manufacturer," said Bill Haas, ASA's vice president of education and training.
