Survey Reveals Interesting Data

Posted 10/18/2005
By Karin White

The Membership Department of ASA sent a survey in March to 1,200 randomly selected mechanical and collision members. The 2005 Membership Survey revealed some interesting statistics for both ASA mechanical and collision member shops.

For example, the sales figures of ASA mechanical members experienced a perplexing shift in 2005, compared to previous years. Noteworthy was an increase in the percentage of facilities reporting annual sales under $100,000, which tripled from 3 percent in previous years to nearly 9 percent in 2005.

Another large shift occurred in the percentage of mechanical facilities reporting annual sales between $300,000 and $500,000. This figure increased from 20 percent in 2004 to 35 percent in 2005. In addition, there was a steep reduction in mechanical facilities whose annual sales figures fell between $500,000 to $1 million. That number fell from 41 percent in 2004 to 26 percent in 2005. A stable annual sales sector is the one between $1 million and $2 million.

The picture is a little different for ASA collision repair businesses. They are demonstrating a rise in annual sales in the $1 million and $2 million categories. Annual sales in those categories rose from 26 percent in 2004 to 32 percent in 2005. The percentage of collision facilities reporting annual sales between $2 million and $4 million and $4 million-plus also increased - from a combined 25 percent in 2004 to a combined 28 percent. The shift to increased sales also shows a diminishing number of collision facilities in the $100,000-$300,000 annual sales category and a zero presence in facilities earning under $100,000.
