A Tribute to Walter TrappPosted 10/7/2002By Dan Frohlich, Chairman Walter joined the ASA staff in 1994 as executive vice president and general counsel. In January 1999 he became ASA's president and chief staff executive. While these titles are wonderful, the things I want to share have nothing to do with titles. I want to share a little about my experiences with Walter the individual. First, last and always, Walter has a great sense of humor. He is one of those people who remembers every joke he's ever heard (and tells them over and over again). Spending time with Walter is never dull. He has never encountered a situation where he didn't have just the right joke or expression to put everything in an appropriately humorous perspective. Walter can laugh at himself. When you spend most of your time with a bunch of shop owners, this is a trait that comes in handy. I can't begin to guess how many times Walter has been harassed for being a lawyer, but then, of course, lawyers deserve it. Another thing Walter is harassed about is being a penny pincher. Seriously, though, his attention to the pennies has been a true service to the members of this association. Walter will spend money, but he's judicious in how he spends it. He always makes certain it benefits the association. Walter is incredibly intelligent. While I'm dealing with the issues of today he has already resolved those and moved on to next week. Mentally, he works at incredible speeds. Buckle up and hold on because he's going to push the sound barrier. Walter is thorough. I think that goes hand in hand with his intelligence. For any issues we consider as a board, Walter presents several action alternatives and a variety of scenarios that could transpire with each potential action. This thoroughness and vision has helped the board make what we believe are wise, responsible decisions. Walter is compassionate. He places tremendous importance on family and one's personal obligations. The ASA staff sees this side of Walter more than we do as members, and they tell me he does everything he can to make certain they meet their professional responsibilities without sacrificing their family obligations. Another thing about Walter is the fact that this column will embarrass him. He does not like the spotlight turned on him. He shies away from public praise and recognition. Lastly, Walter is a good man. Honest. Ethical. Dedicated. Reliable. Regardless of one's title or one's station in life, these are what really matter. Walter, we're going to miss you. While you will no longer be our president, you will always remain our friend. Working with you has been an honor. It's been an education. It's been fun. I consider myself better for knowing you and I consider ASA better for having you be a part of this organization for nine years. Best wishes to you and your wonderful family. Go enjoy the Texas Hill Country and your golf game.
