Taking The Hill
by Stephen B. McDonald, ASA Government Affairs Consultant NTSB To Consider Air Bag Changes
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has conducted a top-to-bottom review of how children 10 years old and under are transported in passenger cars. The study included 120 accidents involving 207 children. To address problems associated with the automobile air bag, NTSB will consider a recommendation that passenger-side air bags deploy at a lower speed. Air bags have been blamed in the deaths of 24 children who were in the front passenger seats of cars that were involved in crashes. Air bag standards were set by another federal agency, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA officials said they would welcome recommendations from NTSB, which makes safety recommendations and investigates the cause of transportation accidents, injuries or fatalities, whether they occur on highways, ocean lanes or airways.SBA Expands Internet Home Page
Small business owners can now access even more information on the Small Business Administration’s (SBA’s) individual program offices and their services through the agency’s home page on the World Wide Web (http://www.sba.gov). Four new program sites available through the SBA home page provide detailed information about the services offered by the office of Business Initiatives, Disaster Assistance, Government Contracting and Surety Guarantees. These sites offer information such as dates and locations of training seminars, addresses of Business Information Centers, one-stop centers for business training, or the latest information about assistance being provided to victims of current or recent disasters. Details are also available on a variety of other SBA programs and services, including financial assistance, innovative research, and management and technical assistance.SBLC Employment Poster
The Small Business Legislative Council (SBLC) is making available a "5-in-1 Employment Poster" that contains all of the notices required to be posted by an employer for federal employment law purposes — including the recently enacted minimum wage law, family and medical leave, equal employment opportunity, employee polygraph protection and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) job safety and health protection. SBLC is selling these posters at $2.50 per poster with a minimum order of 50 posters. To order, contact the SBLC at (202) 639-8500 or write to 1156 15th Street, N.W., Suite 510, Washington, D.C. 20005.Employment Discrimination
The Senate narrowly defeated a bill that would have prohibited employers from basing hiring and other job-related decisions on sexual orientation. The 49-50 vote against the measure came shortly after the Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill that bars federal recognition of same-sex marriage. Even with the Senate passage, the employment measure likely would not have had a future this year. The House is not expected to bring it up. The bill, based on the 1964 Civil Rights Act, would have prohibited employers from using a person’s sexual orientation as a basis for hiring, firing, compensating or promoting.ASA Main Page || AutoInc.
