Chairman’s Message

For Your "Information"

By Don Seyfer

In a recent survey, technicians were asked to comment on the main problem facing the automotive service industry. Responses varied widely, but many could be grouped under one general category — information. Without it, we’re lost. With too much at once, we’re frustrated. With the wrong information, we’re out of business!

Information-related problems can be seen across the board, from technician education issues to access and availability issues. They even surface in customer relations and image issues when customers are not well-informed. There are no easy or immediate answers to these problems, however, if identifying a problem is half the battle, we’re well on our way to victory.

The Automotive Service Association (ASA), as part of it’s five-year strategic plan, is looking into ways to meet your information needs. Specifically, one of ASA’s goals is to be your primary resource for information. In step with this goal, the latest AutoInc. survey asked readers to name their most immediate information needs. The top two responses showed a strong interest in technical and management information. As future issues of AutoInc. are developed, this survey will serve as a guide to deliver information that members value.

In this issue alone, you can benefit from the information presented in the "How’s Your Business?" report on ASA members. The report is compiled from an annual survey of both the mechanical and collision segments of the ASA membership. And if you’re in the collision repair business, this may be your favorite issue! Complete coverage of the International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE) begins on page 14. (Yes, it’s already November!)

On that note, it’s time for me to pack my bags and head to Orlando! I hope to see many of you at NACE ’96 ... I hear it’s packed with plenty of good information!

Don Seyfer is the chairman of the ASA board of directors.
