Survey Helps Compile Annual Sales EstimatesPosted 11/16/2004By Denise Caspersen Recently, the U.S. Census Bureau released estimates of revenue for employer firms for 2002. (I know it's 2004, but these are the latest numbers.) Each year, ASA estimates the annual sales of mechanical and collision repair facilities based on sales data ASA members provide in the "How's Your Business?" survey. For sales of mechanical repair facilities for 2002, ASA had estimated near $42 billion as a whole, including $31 billion for general repair shops. The U.S. Census Bureau reported sales for 2002 at $39.2 billion as a whole, including $31.8 billion for general repair shops. This was a 3.9 percent drop from 2001. ASA had estimated 2002 collision repair annual sales at $28 billion. The U.S. Census Bureau reported sales at nearly $26 billion for 2002 with independent collision repair businesses accounting for $22 billion of the total. For 2003, ASA estimated mechanical annual sales at $45 billion as a whole. This included the $34 billion generated by general repair shops. For collision repair, ASA estimated 2003 collision annual sales at $28 billion. This estimate also included sales from auto glass replacement facilities. ASA is currently tabulating the results of the 2004 "How's Your Business?" survey. As in previous years, these results will help in providing a 2004 annual sales estimate for the industry.
