Las Vegas Highlights

Posted 11/7/2001

Ride From thrilling roller coasters and white tigers to wax museums and gondola rides, Las Vegas has attractions for all ages and interests. Pictured here is the Stratosphere's High Roller, the world's higher roller coaster.

Casino owners learned in the '50s that big-name entertainment draws big crowds. The philosophy is still paying off today. Some star attractions during NACE are Wayne Newton at the Stardust Resort and Casino (800/634-6757), the Commodores at the Las Vegas Hilton (800/732-7117), and Roy Ayers at the Fiesta Casino Hotel (800/731-7333).

There is also an extensive list of specialty shows that play throughout the week. These include the Blue Man Group, made famous by their commercials for Intel, at the Luxor Hotel and Casino (800/288-1000); two different shows by Cirque Du Soleil: Mystere at Treasure Island at the Mirage (800/944-7444), and "O" at Bellagio (888/987-6667); and the obligatory Siegfried and Roy, also at the Mirage. Get a full listing of entertainment options at www.vegasfreedom.com, the official Web site of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitior's Authority.

Please call the individual hotel for prices and showtimes.

Local Hotspots For an insider's pick ofLas Vegas casinos, step off The Strip and head to a collection of gamblinghouses favored by locals. Locals' casinos are some of the busiest and most successful in Las Vegas.

They combine neighborhood locations, plenty of parking, excellent restaurants, low-minimum gambling and exemplary service.

Attractions While contemplating how to service the car of the future, visit the cars of the past at the Imperial Palace Auto Museum, which includes rare models and dozens of vehicles once owned by the famous and infamous. About 200 vehicles total are on display in the Imperial Palace Casino.

If you still can't get enough cars, check the schedule at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway (702/644-4444). The track features a 1.5-mile superspeedway, a 2.5-mile FIA-approved road course, a 4,000-foot drag strip, paved and dirt short tracks, motocross circuits, stadium truck racing facilities, go-kart and Legends cars layouts as well as a Junior Drag racing strip.
