May 1999 AutoInc. Cover
This 1961 Chrysler Imperial was top of the line competition to Lincoln and Cadillac, and was a continuation of Virgil Exner's "Forward Look Designs" that had revolutionized American automotive design after 1955. In a salute to the classic era, it has free-standing headlights under the front fender extensions and a fake continental kit spare tire on the trunk lid. These cars were loaded with accessories such as power windows and seats, automatic headlight dimmer, cruise control, power door locks, and dual air conditioning. Powered by a 413-cubic-inch engine, developing horsepower, acceleration was impressive for such a large car. This beauty was restored by owner Jim Reid and has been refinished with PPG acrylic lacquer.
