Ego Mania!

Posted 5/17/1997
By Robert Anderson, AAM

It seems a new group is being formed nearly every day. A new board is elected along with a new chairperson, and dues have to be paid for each new group. Too many times, the basis for the group's formation is not to better the industry, but more so to satisfy some individual's self-seeking hidden agenda. As a result, this only further fragments the industry and weakens our strengths that we depend on for success.

After a new group is formed, the trade press prints an article, citing how this group's vision is to do something someone else has not done. We all then start pointing fingers and passing blame. Everyone gets riled up and some start proclaiming, "This group is for me!" More often than not, these groups are just "re-inventing the wheel." When will we wake up and take note of this and, as an industry, redefine our focus and all "hitch up to one wagon." Let's maximize our efforts and make our dollars work for everyone. There is plenty of room for all of us to work together for a common cause and mutual goal. There is plenty of room for all "leaders" to come together. We cannot all be chiefs, but we can be strong braves who become leaders, then chiefs. As one of our great leaders, Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, once said, "Great leaders are not born, but are ordinary people who, when faced with decision and circumstance, are not afraid to act."

There is enough time for us all. More importantly, let's coordinate our efforts to get the job done - together. Isn't it about time? Do not look back and blame those who you felt did not get it done. Be honest with yourself. Look in the mirror and ask yourself - "Did I help?" You be the judge. Let's look ahead, hitch up to the same team "together" and get it done! We all talk about a unified industry. "Unity" talk is cheap! Your actions will speak much louder than words. As recently said by Tommy Lee, ASA-New Jersey president, "We can show our strength and solidarity by presenting a cohesive front. Without this, we will always be the subordinate to a legal system that will walk all over us with unfair legislation."

Only through curiosity can we discover opportunities; only by gambling can we take advantage of them. The chances of ultimate success are far greater than if we merely seek "security." ASA has the total package. If you haven't already, will you consider hitching up to our wagon? Let's put our egos aside and fix the real problems.
