Allstate Files Notice Allstate has filed a Notice of Appeal with reference to the recent decision in Allstate Insurance Company, et al. v. Greg Abbott, et al. issued by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, Dallas Division. The court had held that specific provisions preventing insurer-owned shops from doing business in the State of Texas were constitutional. The Automotive Service Association supported the legislation, H.B. 1131, in the Texas legislature. The Allstate appeal is posted on ASA's legislative Web site, www.TakingTheHill.com.
NASCAR Launches Vehicle Donation Program NASCAR is urging its fans to start their engines and, if they don't start, to consider donating those vehicles to The NASCAR Foundation Vehicle Donation Program. The Foundation supports more than 25 driver, track and industry charities. The donations are tax deductible and take the hassle out of deciding what to do with an unwanted car, truck or RV. The donation process is quick and easy, says NASCAR, and can be done online at www.nascar.com/foundation.
Babcox to Sponsor Scholarships From the Car Care Council Women's Board comes word that Babcox Publications has agreed to be a sponsor of its 2006 scholarship program. Scholarships will be awarded to female students who are pursuing education to prepare themselves for a career in the automotive aftermarket. Babcox Publications is a business-to-business magazine and custom publishing company serving both the automotive aftermarket and the truck fleet market.
Recyclers Help Celebrate Earth Day On April 22, thousands of professional automotive recyclers celebrated the 35th Earth Day. People everywhere recognize Earth Day as a day to come together to remember and remind others how important it is to respect and protect the earth.
Automotive Recyclers Association members worldwide participated in various events to further raise consumer awareness of the environmental and economic benefits of automotive recycling.
Be Sure You Comply with Labor Laws If your shop has some low-wage workers, you should study Department of Labor information to be sure you comply. The Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division is responsible for the enforcement of the Fair Labor Standards Act minimum wage, overtime and youth employment provisions.
