Collision Repair Shops Show Slight Growth

Posted 5/10/2004
By Denise Caspersen

In last month's issue, the growth of mechanical shops was highlighted. In this issue, we look at the independent collision repair industry.

Independent collision repair shops with employees saw an increase in estimated revenue from $22,322,000,000 in 2001 to $22,353,000,000 in 2002, growing 0.1 percent.

The auto glass replacement segment of the collision repair industry did not fare as well. This segment noted a drop of 3.8 percent in sales from 2001 to 2002, going from $3.6 billion in 2001 to $3.4 billion in 2002.

This reduction created a 0.4 percent decline in the overall collision repair segment from 2001 to 2002, reporting an overall $29,221,000,000 in estimated revenue for employer and non-employer firms in 2002, compared to $29,263,000,000 in 2001.

Of the $29,221,000,000 in revenue, $25,845,000,000 come from businesses with employees, leaving $3,376,000,000 for non-employer collision and glass businesses.
