Closing Remarks on a Great Year

Posted 3/16/1999
By Carl Miller, AAM

Portrait of Carl Miller Time has passed quickly and this year is no exception. March is here already and my term as chairman of ASA's board of directors has come and gone. At the first of this year, my task to write 12 columns for AutoInc. seemed like a lot. But with the help of the ASA communications department staff keeping me on the straight and narrow, we have arrived at the last one.

It seems ironic that during my term Bud Merwin retired as the association's president. Bud installed me the first time I took any kind of office with ASA, which was vice president of the Salem, Ore., local unit. As an association we have seen Bud's leadership take us to heights never thought possible and for that I say thank you, Bud. We are moving into new times and I feel confident that we have the best possible choice for the association's new president in Walter Trapp. Walt has become a friend and is a real asset for ASA. Time will prove that your board made the right decision in hiring Walt.

We have seen some major changes with ASA that are very positive for our future. Our board of directors has made some difficult decisions this year, and I am proud of the way those decisions were made. Not all decisions were popular, but they were very necessary. We have every right to finish this term feeling proud of our accomplishments. The future leaders that will take the helm of this great association are very qualified and will continue to do what is best for you, the member. As we enter the next millennium with ASA, we are set to grow and become more visible. This is the first time in the history of ASA that you, as a member, have the freedom of choice as to your involvement with ASA. I would hope that you will stay involved at all levels, but that will be your choice.

Our national benefit program is second to none and many state and local units have good programs as well. Your dues dollars are returned to you many times over with the savings offered through ASA's many benefits. The staff in the national office is, without a doubt, the most helpful group of people that I have ever come across when it comes to answering questions concerning any of the ASA national benefit programs. Take the best of these benefits to enhance your business. The future for the automotive repair aftermarket looks very strong. Let each of us get geared up for the years ahead and work together for a brighter future.

I have enjoyed the opportunity to visit some of your state functions and I thank you for the chance to meet many of you at those functions. Next month will be another new start as Johnny Mock takes the helm and I wish only the best for him. Do your best to support him and the board he will be working with.

In closing, it has been an honor to serve you as chairman of this great association. Through this next year as past chairman I will finish my time in leadership with ASA. My plan for the future is to spend more time with my wife of 43 years. She has stood beside me in both good and bad times, and for that I'm eternally grateful. I do hope to see each of you at future ASA events.
