Know Your CompetitionPosted 3/1/2002By Denise Caspersen
Competition is one element mechanical and collision businesses have plenty of. Recently an ASA member phoned, wondering how many mechanical repair businesses there are without employees. That would be in addition to the 99,444 mechanical businesses employing 385,325 individuals and generating $33,510,059,000 in receipts. According to the U.S. Census, there are approximately 132,966 automotive mechanical and electrical repair businesses without employees. These nonemployee businesses generate approximately $5,648,216,000 in receipts annually. Activities of the 132,966 nonemployee businesses include general repair, exhaust, tire and specialty repair. The 41,168 auto body, paint, interior and glass repair businesses employing 234,359 individuals and generating $20,905,280,000 in receipts also have non-employee business competition. According to the U.S. Census, there are approximately 67,857 nonemployee auto body, paint, interior and glass repair businesses generating $2,646,360,000 in receipts. Hopefully, this helps in creating a more detailed picture of the competition.
