Timing Chain Can Cause Coolant Leak in Engine Oil
Vehicles: 1989-1990 240 Nissan SX KA24E System: Engine Cooling Symptom/Problem: Coolant getting into the engine oil Test and Fix: Remove the timing chain cover and inspect it for signs of timing chain wear. A wear crack can penetrate into the water pump outlet passage. If the timing chain has not recently been replaced, then replace the timing chain tensioner and the timing chain and guides along with the cover (if it is damaged). If the chain, tensioner and guides were recently replaced, was the cover carefully inspected? Background: If you encounter coolant in the engine oil and there is no evidence of a head gasket problem, check the timing chain cover for damage. The KA24E engine has had a problem with the timing chain tensioner failing. This causes the timing chain to become loose and break the chain guides, and actually wear a hole in the timing chain cover. The water pump mounts to the front cover. The chain wears through the front cover on the back side of the water pump outlet. The coolant is then able to leak down inside the front cover and right into the oil pan. Listen for excess noise in the timing chain area, which could indicate a loose chain and cause this problem.

Any open reading indicates the blower resistor is defective.

Vehicle: 1989 through 1992 Ford Probe equipped with manual AC-Heat system only. (Does not apply to the automatic AC-Heat system.)
Symptom/Problem: The AC clutch engages only on the lower or lowest blower speed setting and the blower motor runs only when the blower switch is in the higher speed settings. The blower resistor block is bad.
Quick Fix: Replace the blower motor resistor block located on the bottom of the heater case next to the blower motor.
Identifying the System: Make sure that the vehicle is equipped with a manual AC-Heat system and not the automatic system. The quickest way to identify one from the other is by observing the blower select switch.
The manual system blower speed has settings of Off, 1,2,3, 4, with the AC push button located in the middle of the blower switch. The automatic system has blower speed settings of Off to Max instead of numbers, with a separate AC push button and blower switch.
Diagnosing this symptom was difficult because the original Ford wiring diagram was drawn incorrectly, resulting in the replacement of the blower speed control switch - and no correction of the problem.
There appeared to be no other association between the blower motor and the AC clutch. The corrected diagram showed that the AC switch ground supply is received through a connection into the No. 1 blower speed circuit. When the blower speed switch is placed in the "1" position, the AC switch is provided a ground directly through the blower switch contacts. In any of the higher blower speed settings, the AC switch ground is supplied through the blower speed resistor block and then through the blower speed switch. This is why the AC clutch usually works fine on the lowest blower speed setting but may not work on any of the higher blower speed settings. Obviously an opening in the blower speed resistor block can also cause no blower speed function in one of the lower settings.
To test the blower speed resistor, remove the 1-wire connector and the 4-wire connector from the resistor block. Test for resistance between the 1-wire terminal and each of the other terminals on the block. Any open reading indicates the blower resistor is defective.
