Return on Investment

Posted 6/7/2002
By Dan Frohlich, Chairman

Dan Frohlich Now that I'm writing a column for AutoInc., I've learned the “copy due date” on a monthly magazine is several weeks before its publication date. This column that you're reading in June, for instance, was actually written at the end of April. Consequently, taxes and tax returns are still on my mind.

Owning a “not for profit” (according to my accountant) auto repair and body shop, “return on investment” might be a far financial stretch. But, when I use that term in relationship to my employees and my membership in ASA, it takes on a whole different meaning.

For example, it is our shop's policy to pay for all of the work-related training for our employees. Now, I know, some of you are probably saying, “I did that and the guy down the street offered them more money, and now they're working for my competition.” I've been there, done that, and have the scars to prove it. The employees who stayed, however, are more productive and they appreciate the opportunities they've been given to improve their skills. And, you know what, some of the techs who left and went down the street have stopped by to see if I have any openings.

How does this tie into my membership in ASA? Well, my friend, it seems that by attending various association meetings and events I have picked up a number of ideas from other shop owners to use in my own facility. One of those ideas is to send the entire staff to either CARS or NACE - a vacation in their minds, training and industry exposure in my mind. Talk about a retention tool!

You might be asking: “OK, how can I afford that?” One shop owner told me he purchases parts and supplies on a credit card offering frequent flyer miles. He uses those miles to send his employees to the events. His “return on investment” is outstanding in both his and his employees' eyes. Guess who is going to borrow this idea and send his repair shop staff to CARS and his collision shop staff to NACE?

Picking up great ideas from industry colleagues is just one example of how membership in ASA offers a very profitable return on investment.

Keep the ideas coming! Your fellow members, myself included, are listening.
