It's All About the Claims...Posted 6/15/2001By Denise Caspersen
Insurance rates are in. According to a recent Runzheimer International report, average annual insurance premiums vary from nearly $3,000 in Detroit to under $600 in Des Moines, Iowa, for coverage for a mid-size sedan driven within a 50-mile radius of the city. Los Angeles and Philadelphia car owners also approached the $3,000-per-year mark at $2,865 and $2,829, respectively. Insurance bargains are around the bend in places such as Eau Claire, Wis., where the same driver, driving the same vehicle, pays only $584, and Bismark, N.D., where vehicle owners pay 620 bucks. Reasons for the difference relate directly to the number of claims. According to Thomas Peiffer, Runzheimer consultant, Insurance companies set rates based on claims records. Fewer accidents, vehicle thefts and collision damage repair bills in Des Moines vs. Detroit translate into much lower insurance premiums.
