The ASA Ascettes held its annual meeting during the ASA Annual Convention April 12-15 at Marriott's Grand Hotel Resort in Point Clear, Ala. Each year the group presents three awards during the convention. The first award, honoring the largest affiliate delegation attending the convention, went to ASA-Illinois Mechanical Division with 26 members registered as of March 3. The second award was given to the member(s) who traveled the farthest distance to attend the convention. This award was given to Elaine Mills, AAM, Mills Automotive Repair in Bellingham, Wash., who traveled 2,951.1 miles.The Ascettes also presented Marge Miller, AAM, Japanese Connection, Salem, Ore., with the Lady of the Year award. Miller was selected for this award for her continued commitment to ASA and the automotive service industry.
ASA-Washington hires vice president of membership
Effective May 1, Jeff Lovell became ASA-Washington's vice president of membership. Lovell previously worked for Overall Laundry Services for 20 years. He has been a longtime supporter of ASA and has served as treasurer of the ASA-Pierce County chapter.
Among other responsibilities, Lovell will be working with all the ASA-Washington chapters to assist in membership recruitment and retention. ASA-Washington is excited to have Lovell on its team.
ASA-Georgia answers member needs
A common request among ASA-Georgia members has been for high quality and easily accessible training. The members asked and their association delivered, with its third annual 2Excel Hi-tech Training and Expo, held Saturday, March 4, at the Gwinnett Cultural and Civic Center.

2Excel offered an array of instructors specializing in various areas of the automotive industry including management, mechanical and collision fields. The featured management speaker was Mitch Schneider of Mitch Schneider's Future Tech who presented two seminars, The Price of Admission, and Approaching Operational Excellence.
Several mechanical courses were offered covering emission failure, lab scope diagnostics, electrical systems, air conditioning, anti-lock brakes and OBD-II.
The collision courses offered included the I-CAR class, Plastics Repair. Also offered were Color Adjustment and a class designed especially for collision shop owners and managers called Problem Solving and Productivity.
According to the affiliate, 2Excel was a great success. This event has seen a steady increase in its attendance, drawing participants not only from Georgia but from South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.
ASA-Phoenix hires chapter development director
Bruce McLaughlin, AAM, has taken the position of chapter development director for the ASA-Phoenix Metro chapter. McLaughlin will develop and implement a chapter growth program designed to increase chapter membership and involvement.
Earlier this year, McLaughlin retired from the automotive repair industry after more than 25 years. His experience in chapter development and his knowledge of the structure of ASA will be invaluable in the growth of the chapter, said Dave Lanspeary, AAM, chapter president.
8th annual Vision 2000 reaches milestone
Racing to Success was the theme for the 8th Annual ASA-Greater Kansas City Vision 2000 management and technical education program and exposition. Vision broke all previous attendance records with more than 2,100 industry professionals taking part in the three-day event, held March 3-5 at the Kansas City Market Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Vision offered attendees a wide variety of automotive repair education including two Automotive Management Institute (AMI) seminars. The AMI seminars, taught by Bob O'Connor and Craig Van Batenburg, earned participants 18 credits toward the institute's Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM) designation. The program also offered 15 technical training courses on topics such as electronic A/C systems diagnostics, diagnosing electrical accessories, advanced solutions to wheel and tire vibration, OBD II service, and wiring diagrams.
In addition to the education program, the exposition provided a prime opportunity to see, compare, evaluate and purchase some of the latest products offered to the automotive repair industry. The show draws attendees from 13 states, including some from as far away as South Dakota and Utah.
ASA-Kansas City is working on next year's event and 60 percent of the exhibit hall is already sold out. The 9th Annual Vision will be held March 2-4, 2001, at the Park Place Hotel and Kansas City Market Center in Kansas City, Mo.
NATIONAL NEWS
ASA has released a new report titled A Status of Shop Licensing.
The report provides the industry with a summary status of shop licensing laws and regulations from both state and local governments across the country. The report was first completed in 1992 and has been updated in subsequent years to ensure accuracy. Copies of the report are available through ASA's Washington, D.C., office at (202) 543-1440.
ASA will hold its 2001 Annual Convention April 23-28 at the Westin Hotel in Maui, Hawaii. The convention is designed to bring members and industry professionals together to conduct association business, share knowledge and expertise, renew friendships, and have fun. The convention offers division meetings, the affiliate assembly, an awards ceremony, the AMI cap and gown graduation, and the chairman's reception and banquet.

The seminar, Lip Service, was taught by Margie Seyfer and earned attendees six credits toward the institute's Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM) designation. Seyfer instructed participants on proper business telephone techniques.
In addition to the seminar, John Mock, AAM, ASA immediate past chairman, addressed attendees and spoke of the importance of management education, the institute and his involvement in earning his AAM. The seminar attracted more that 80 participants.
Reminder of the Month
Mark your calendars to attend the 2000 Congress of Automotive Repair and Service (CARS) to be held Nov. 2-4 at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas.
The program will include business management seminars offered by the Automotive Management Institute (AMI), which will earn attendees credit toward the institute's Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM) designation. In addition to management education, CARS will offer several technical courses. Watch your mail for registration and housing information.
