What Are They Up To?

AutoInc. Profiles Past Chairmen of ASA

Dan F. Frohlich
ASA Chairman:
May 2002 - March 2003

Q: What are you doing currently?
A: As little as possible! I am lucky to have a great management team. I do not believe in micromanaging, so I have chosen to let them run the show. I still go to the shop daily (when my wife, Sean, and I are not out playing with our grandson) and drive the tow truck, pick up parts or do all of the maintenance work.

Q: What advice would you give to ASA members aspiring to serve on the board?
A: Become, and continue to be, a student of your business. You will never "know it all." Every day I learn something new about the automotive repair industry. As the saying goes, "If you're not growing you're dying."

Q: What are your best memories and accomplishments as chairman?
A: Some of the best memories as chairman were the friendships that Sean and I made and still have today with other ASA members across the country and with the great staff at ASA's national headquarters. I had the honor of chairing the search committee to find Walter Trapp's replacement. Our committee suggested Ron Pyle. The board ratified his hiring, and ASA has benefited from it ever since. The other thing I am proud of is helping to get the Affiliate Assembly more involved in the association from the way the meetings are held to the brainstorming sessions. At this year's annual convention, it was rewarding to see how professional the Affiliate Assembly Meeting was conducted.

Scholarship Deadline Approaching

Aug. 17 is the deadline for returning applications for scholarships to help defer the costs of attending the International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE) and the Congress of Automotive Repair and Service (CARS) - both of which will be held this fall in Las Vegas.

Winners will be notified by Sept. 7. ASA collision members are eligible to apply for three $1,000 scholarships available to NACE. ASA mechanical members are eligible to apply for five scholarships for CARS. For more information and to complete a scholarship application, go to the Automotive Management Institute Web site at www.AMIonline.org and click on prospective students.

ASA Affiliate Enjoys Day of Shotgun Fun

Special
Linda Crist, ASA-Colorado affiliate executive director, gets a lesson from Warren Anderson on shooting pheasant and sporting clay.
ASA-Colorado invited all automotive professionals who are bird-hunting enthusiasts for an event held in Bennett, Colo., at the Kiowa Creek Sporting Club. On March 23, ASA-Colorado kicked off the morning with a pheasant hunt followed by lunch and an afternoon of shooting clays.

Special
Jeff Vik and James Mulhern from B&M Transmission and Stan Elmore from Stan's Auotmotive take a moment from the shotgun fun to pose for a photo.
Whether the hunters brushed up on their shooting skills on the professionally designed sporting clays course or hunted game birds, they were assured of having challenging shoots and unparalleled hunting opportunities. Warren Anderson of Rocky Mountain Paint & Body in Longmont, Colo., was presented with a $100 gift card to Bass Pro Shop for having the highest score in the clay shoot. Steve Mancinelli of Mancinelli's Inc. in Denver came in second and was presented with a $50 gift card. For more information on ASA-Colorado events, call Linda Crist at (303) 202-5231 or visit www.ASAshop.org/asaco.

ASA-Nebraska Hosts Leadership Conference

ASA-Nebraska hosted its "Powerfully Positive Leadership" conference April 4 at Harrah's Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The business meeting gave the affiliate an opportunity to invite non-ASA members to observe ASA's full potential.

Herb Anderson, a representative of Alldata, spoke to approximately 35 attendees on the subject of leadership and what it takes to be a leader. Anderson also discussed how to use one's expertise to make each day better than the day before.

"The conference was very successful," said Jennah Haase, ASA-Nebraska executive director. "We got the ASA name out to some nonmember shops, and our speaker was great. We also had great response from our sponsor, AutoZone. It was a fun night."

ASA-Nebraska holds a regular business meeting the first Wednesday of each month. Be sure to register for its upcoming ASA-Nebraska annual convention and the Direction '07 meetings in October. For more information on any of the ASA-Nebraska events, contact Jennah Haase at (402) 540-8055 or visit www.ASAnebraska.com.

Reminder of the Month: Chairman's Club
Look Who's in the Running for an Expense-Paid Trip to CARS or NACE

No one can recruit another shop into your trade association better than you. That's why the Chairman's Club has always been an integral part of the Automotive Service Association's membership recruitment program. For every application processed at the national office that is submitted by a regular member, that member earns five points.

The member with the most points Sept. 14, 2007, will receive an expense-paid* trip to CARS or NACE. In the case of a tie, a drawing will be held to determine the winner. To be eligible for the trip you must have a minimum of 50 points.

*Expenses covered - round-trip airline ticket plus registration to the event and four nights in a hotel. Food and beverage are the responsibility of the winner. All accommodations must be arranged by ASA.
