North American Light Vehicle SalesPosted 7/12/2000By Denise Caspersen
Light vehicle sales and production is projected to boom over the next few years. According to the Light Vehicle Original Equipment Committee of the Automotive Market Research Council (AMRC), North American light vehicle sales are forecasted to be 18,359,000 for 2000. Sales are expected to decrease in 2001 to 17,808,000 light vehicles. This number will gradually increase over the next few years and is predicted to close out 2005 at an estimated 18,473,000 vehicles. Imports as a percentage of sales within the light vehicle market are projected at approximately 13.5 percent of the North American total for 2000. Interestingly, the Light Vehicle Original Equipment Committee forecasts that this percentage will decrease slightly during 2001 through 2005. These projections are based on the consumer price index, unemployment, disposable personal income and the wealth effect.
