AutoInc. CoverThe new Honda Insight is the first gasoline-hybrid to be sold in the United States. It has an all-aluminum body/chassis, 1.0 liter 3 cylinder engine with electrical flywheel that uses both gasoline and 144 volts of electricity to propel it at over 100 mph and with good acceleration. It has the lowest coefficients of drag (0.25) of any mass-produced automobile and delivers between 60 and 70 mpg. Because its primary power comes from its gasoline engine, the Insight drives just like any other automobile. No external power supply is needed for recharging; batteries are recharged by regenerative braking. The Insight has electric power steering, technology from the Acura NSX and a special NOx catalyst that reduces NOx by 50 percent. Only 6,500 of these cars will be built this year. This car, Serial No. 000157, is owned by Craig Van Batenburg, an independent Honda technician and trainer. An ASA member in Worcester, Mass., he owns Van Batenburg's Garage Inc. and ACDC, a training company.
