Electronic Voting Open for National Elections

Posted 1/20/1998
By Robert Anderson, AAM

Portrait of Bob Anderson On Jan. 5, the electronic voting line opened for elections to the Automotive Service Association (ASA) national board of directors. The toll-free telephone number is (800) 868-3272 and may be accessed 24 hours a day. The voting line will remain open until Feb. 22.

This year, there are three open positions: general director, Collision Division director and Mechanical Division director. Information about the candidates can be found in this issue. As a regular member of ASA, you are entitled to vote for candidates representing your specific division. For example, if you joined ASA as a mechanical member, you will be able to vote for a Mechanical Division candidate. However, you will not be able to vote for a candidate running for Collision Division director. All regular members in good standing may vote for candidates seeking the general director position.

The voting process is very simple and just requires you to have your member number and three-digit security code, which can be found on your December 1997, and January and February AutoInc. mailing labels. Once you enter this information, you will be instructed on how to proceed.

It is imperative that we all exercise our right to vote for the candidate of our choice. If you are not familiar with the candidates, then I certainly understand why you may opt not to vote. However, if you know the candidates or have the time to get acquainted with them, for example, by reading their biographical information in AutoInc., then I encourage you to take a few minutes and vote. Remember, these candidates are running for positions on the ASA national board of directors, which supervises, controls and directs the affairs of the association.

However, I encourage you to personally know and investigate the reasons why these individuals seek the respective offices. You have an ethical responsibility to vote, but more important than going through the process is voting for the person who truly represents the best interest of a majority of the membership. The person you vote for should have the ability and knowledge to see the "big picture;" must be willing and capable of fighting or defending his beliefs on any given issue; should be a team player serving the wishes of the majority; and must be willing and capable to commit the time it takes as a volunteer to serve the members and this association.

ASA has grown over the years and is recognized as the most prominent trade association representing automotive repair professionals. It is your responsibility as a voting member to see to it that this tradition continues. Don't vote merely for the sake of voting. Do not allow anyone to tell you who to vote for. It is your responsibility to seek and get the answers and vote accordingly. Make it a point to become personally acquainted with the candidates, their visions, dreams and what they commit and promise to do for ASA.

The voting process and tabulation of results will be administered by an independent company. This is the safest and surest method to protect the integrity of the voting process; that is, to use a professional outside firm as we have over the past several years. Once the votes are tabulated, candidates will be notified and official results will be announced through AutoInc. and at the ASA Annual Convention, March 11-15, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. With the announcements, we will also include information about the percentage of votes received from each state.

If you have questions concerning the actual mechanics of the voting, please call (800) 272-7467, ext. 213. As always, thank you for your membership in ASA.
