Voting Line Open For 1997 National Elections

The candidates found below and on the following page make up the official ballot for the 1997 elections for the ASA national board of directors. These candidates are seeking election to the positions (2) of General Director.

Elections will take place using an electronic voting process and a touch-tone telephone. All regular members of ASA who reside in the United States (Hawaii and Alaska) may vote by calling toll-free, (800) 868-3272. (If you are an international member, you will be sent a ballot so that you may vote by mail.) You may vote anytime between Jan. 2, 1997, and Feb. 23, 1997. Please follow the voting procedures listed below:

Select the candidates for whom you wish to vote.

Locate your member number and three-digit security code found on the mailing label of this issue. You must have these numbers to vote. You must complete the entire voting process to register your vote.

Call toll-free, (800) 868-3272. The voting line is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You must use a touch-tone phone to vote. If you do not have a touch-tone phone, call (800) 272-7467, ext. 213, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. (CST).

After you access the voting line, you will be asked to enter your member number and the three-digit security code. After you enter this information, you will be walked through the voting process. If at any time you experience a problem, please call (800) 272-7467, ext. 213, for assistance.

Do not attempt to mail these ballots. They have been included only to notify you of the candidates and their backgrounds. Like most voice mail systems, the electronic voting process is designed to be simple, quick and user-friendly. Election results will be announced during the 1997 ASA Annual Convention, March 11-16, in Colorado Springs, Colo.

General Director: Michael J. Lund (Incumbent) -- Jim C. Keller (Opponent)

Michael J. Lund, AAM, owns Fairway Collision Center, Inc., in Vadnais Heights, Minn., and has been an ASA member since 1975. Lund has been in the automotive service industry for more than 30 years and has held numerous positions within ASA on the state level, including treasurer, Collision Division chairman and state president of ASA-Minnesota. His business was awarded the 3M-ARMS "Shop of the Year" award in 1988 and 80 percent of his technicians are trained by the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR). Lund's business was also one of the first in Minnesota to become an I-CAR Gold shop. He completed two years of engineering at the University of Minnesota and received his Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM) designation from the Automotive Service Association Management Institute (ASAMI) in 1996. He frequently attends NACE, ASA-Minnesota state conventions and ASA national meetings. Lund is a founding member of I-CAR, and is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the State Vocational Board and the Vadnais Heights Economic Development Council. Lund was appointed General Director in 1996 to the ASA board of directors to complete the one-year term of Joe Sanders, AAM, who was elected Collision Division director. When asked why he would like to continue serving on the ASA board of directors, Lund said, "ASA has been an important part in the success of my business and if re-elected I would like to share that experience with other members of our association." Jim C. Keller is president of Motorcar Body and Paint in Milwaukee, Wis., and has been an ASA member since 1987. Keller's staff is 80 percent ASE-certified and ASE master-certified, with 80 percent being trained by the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR). His shop is an I-CAR Gold Class Shop. He was instrumental in founding ASA-Wisconsin in 1990 and served as state president from 1990-1992, as well as serving on the ASA National Collision Division Operations Committee in 1991. He has attended NACE every year since its inception. Keller earned an Associate of Science Degree, Business Concentration and Certificate in Sales and Marketing from the Cardinal Stritch College in Milwaukee. Keller served as I-CAR state chairman in 1989, as well as on numerous I-CAR national committees. He currently serves as advisory chair for the Waukesha County Technical College and is a member of the Steering, Technical and Marketing Committees for the I-CAR Uniform Auto Repair Procedures. In 1988, Keller was inducted into the Collision Concept's Hall of Eagles. Keller has presented more than 125 management seminars for 3M and Dawn Enterprises throughout the United States and Canada. His non-industry affiliations include administrative board member of Our Lords Methodist Church. When asked why he wanted to serve on the ASA national board of directors, Keller said, "To help ASA help the industry. ASA has helped me become a better businessman, and I would like to give back to the industry through my service to ASA." He can be reached at (414) 354-2400.

General Director: Skip Burroughs (Incumbent) -- Charles R. Elder (Opponent)

Skip Burroughs, AAM, owns Mastercraft Automotive in Amarillo, Texas, and has been an ASA member since 1985. His business is a NAPA Car Care Center, Bosch Authorized Service Center and AAA-approved. He employs seven people, four of whom are ASE-certified and two are ASE master-certified. He is an ASE master-certified technician with advanced level designation, and has been in the automotive service industry for more than 35 years. Burroughs has served as president of the ASA-Amarillo chapter, and as ASA-Texas regional director, state vice president and state president. He has also been a member of the ASA Mechanical Division Operations Committee and he has served as ASA General Director since 1995. He was awarded the ASA-Texas "Director of the Year" award and has been a member of the ASA Chairman's Club. Burroughs graduated with his Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM) designation from the Automotive Service Association Management Institute (ASAMI) in 1994. He serves on the Amarillo Technical College advisory committee and the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Committee I/M 240 Rules Making Committee. His non-industry affiliations include serving on the Amarillo International Airport board of directors as vice chairman and the Amarillo Better Business Bureau board of directors. He is also a member of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce and has served on the air show committee. Burroughs is a graduate of the Cadillac College of Business. He frequently attends CARS, NACE, ASA-Texas state conventions and ASA national meetings. He has been recommended by NAPA to serve on the ASE Test Questions Review Panel for the L-1 advanced level test. When asked why he would like to continue serving on the ASA board of directors, Burroughs said, "I would like to contribute my knowledge and experience to the national efforts of ASA, gain and share knowledge obtained from future experiences and to be a part of the future." Charles R. Elder, AAM, owns Ray Gordon Brake Service, in Tallahassee, Fla. Elder's staff is 100 percent ASE-certified with 14 percent ASE master-certified. He has been an ASA member since 1976 and has been in the automotive service industry for more than 25 years. Elder has served as ASA-Leon County chapter education chairman (1986); vice president (1987); president (1988, 1989, 1995); and chapter delegate (1988, 1989, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996). On the state level, Elder has served as government affairs chairman (1989, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996); president-elect (1990); president (1991); and past president (1992). He also served on the ASA National Mechanical Division Steering Committee from 1989 - 1990. He has attended the ASA-Florida convention every year since 1982, as well as CARS and the ASA annual convention since 1988. Elder has a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Tennessee and earned his Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM) designation in 1994. He has received many awards, including Tallahassee Small Business of the Year and the ASA-Florida Member of the Year in 1990; and the Undercar Digest "Top Shop in the Southeast USA" award in 1992. He was also nominated in 1993 for the NFIB "Best in America." Elder is a member of the Automotive Hall of Fame, the Automotive Undercar Trade Organization (AUTO), the Automotive Information Management (AIM), and has been a technical member of the Ford Motor Company Dispute Settlement Board since 1994. He is chairman of the State of Florida Automotive Advisory Board for the Department of Consumer Service. Elder's non-industry affiliations include memberships in the Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce; the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; the NFIB; the Northeast Business Association; the Southside Business Association; the Tres Dias; and the Christian Heritage Church. "I have been active in improving our industry in Tallahassee and in the state of Florida and would like the opportunity to do more on the national level. I feel ASA is in a position where we can have a major influence in the direction of our industry if we continue with strong leadership. So much of the future of our industry is tied to government regulation, it is essential that we have a strong presence in Washington, D.C. and in every state capital. Because I live in a capital city and have been involved in the legislative process for many years, I would like to use that experience to help on a national level to benefit our industry. I would also like to explore new ways to better communicate and serve our members on the local level," said Elder, when asked why he would like to serve on the ASA national board of directors.
