Alternative Fuel Use On The Rise
According to a recent report in AFDC Update, alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) sales will rise between 400,000 to 700,000 annually by the year 2,000 and AFV populations will total one million to two million by the year 2005. In the automotive service industry, 2,000 to 4,000 people will be employed by the year 2000 to perform AFV conversions. These numbers are predicted to reach 5,000 to 7,000 by the year 2005.

Growth factors for AFVs include federal, state and local legislation that address future petroleum supply issues, the Energy Policy Act of 1972 (EPACT), and the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (CAAA).

Based on a National Alternative Fuel Vehicle Inventory and Analysis report, EPACT and CAAA are expected to encourage expansion of the alternative fuel infrastructure, adding 4,000 to 7,000 refueling stations by the year 2000 and 13,000 to 20,000 by the year 2005. The construction industry will employ 1,600 to 3,000 by the year 2000 to build these alternative fuel stations, and employment figures will climb to 4,000 by the year 2005.

Certification Of CNG And LPG Programs Announced
The National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF), in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, has released a new program to certify qualified training programs preparing entry level technicians for converting and maintaining vehicles that run on compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The voluntary certification program was developed as part of the Certification of Higher-learning in Alternative Motorfuels Program (CHAMP). Under this program, NATEF brought together representatives from across the alternative fuel industry to develop national standards.
