Seyfer Named Chairman Of NATEF Board
Automotive Service Association (ASA) Chairman-elect Donald C. Seyfer, an Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM), was recently named chairman of the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) board of trustees. Seyfer is owner of Seyfer Automotive in Wheat Ridge, Colo.

"Technician education is extremely important at this time, both entry-level and in-service. I am honored to be in a position to help that education," said Seyfer.

Seyfer will begin his new position in January. Prior to this position, Seyfer served as vice chairman of NATEF. His involvement with NATEF and his contributions as chairman of an in-service technician education and training standards committee led to his new position as chairman of the board.

NATEF, a part of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), evaluates educational programs for ASE certification. A NATEF Evaluation Team Leader (ETL) meets with local technicians to conduct two-day, on-site program evaluations. The ETL then reports to the NATEF office and if all standards appear to be met, NATEF recommends certification by ASE.

ASE has also announced its 1996 board. Serving as chairman is Michael Brannan, manager of service development for Freightliner Corp., Portland, Ore.; Albert Duebber, owner of Duebber's Automotive Service Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, is vice chairman.

Antifreeze Use Increases As Temperatures Drop
Normal and below-normal winter temperatures in many parts of the United States require motorists to maintain proper heating system care, including antifreeze, to prevent breakdowns. A Valvoline study showed that most motorists base when to change their antifreeze on the changing of the seasons. On average, women reported changing their antifreeze three times in the last three years compared with 2.5 changes reported by men. The rate for changing antifreeze in the last three years for respondents 18 to 34 years old was three times, compared to 2.5 times for adults 35 to 49 years old and 2.1 times for people over 50. About 60 percent of antifreeze buyers report disposing their old antifreeze by recycling.

ASE Gives $150,000 To Students, Instructors
In December, the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) provided student aid checks of $10,000 to automotive technology programs at nine schools and $5,000 cash to be shared by the department head and instructors of those programs. The presentations, ASE Awards of Excellence, were made at the American Vocational Association (AVA) national convention in Denver. Award recipients were chosen by the Industry Planning Council (IPC) in its "Awards for Excellence in Automotive Service Training" competition. In addition to the nine programs recognized, a special "ASE Chair's Award" will be conferred on a deserving program selected by the 1995 chairman of the ASE board, Joe Sanders, who is Automotive Service Association (ASA) general director and owner of Fort Worth Classic Paint and Body in Fort Worth, Texas. The chair's award will be announced early this year.
