Buying a Digital Camera For Your Shop

A digital camera can be a useful investment for your shop, especially in the collision repair industry. And although a digital camera is more expensive than a conventional camera, its versatility and wide array of uses make it a prime necessity for any shop. However, there are certain things to look for to make sure you're getting the most out of your digital camera purchase.

When buying a digital camera, look at image capacity. How many images can the camera's memory hold? Camera memory varies in range from 2 to 8 megabytes, while storing from 10 to 100-plus images. Be leery of cameras that promise twice as many images as a competing model. It may not actually have more storage space, but may be sacrificing image quality. If the camera does not store as many pictures as you would like, look into reusable memory cards, which allow you to add as much memory to the camera as you feel you need.

One disadvantage of digital cameras is their inability to handle changes in lighting conditions. If you are taking pictures under the fluorescent lights in your shop, make sure you're purchasing a camera that has enough flexibility to handle a wide range of exposure conditions.

Another important question to ask is whether the camera can run off rechargeable batteries. This could save you a lot of money in the long run. When the camera is connected to the computer, it tends to use more battery power. If you have the option of running your camera off an external power source, do so.

Image quality is also important to consider. If you're taking progress pictures to send to your customers via e-mail or to post on your Web site, a camera with a 640 x 480 pixel resolution will suffice. But if you're planning to print pictures from your computer, look for higher resolution cameras.

There's a lot to consider when buying a digital camera. Don't make a hasty decision when buying because it could be the best investment for your shop this year.

Net Numbers

By 2006, 63 percent of all cameras sold worldwide will be digital, encompassing $9.9 billion in revenues.
