AutoInc. CoverProduction of 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe grew out of a racing SL prototype that won the 1952 Le Mans 24-hour race. The overhead cam six-cylinder engine produced 240 horsepower out of 2,996 cubic centimeters. It had a four-speed manual transmission, drum brakes, rode on a 94.5-inch wheelbase and weighed 2,750 pounds. The half-height Gullwing doors, which were necessary to maintain rigidity in the high-sided chassis, were beautiful, but made entry into the front seats somewhat difficult. Nonetheless, over 1,400 buyers spent in excess of $7,000 for one, even though a new Cadillac was $3,500. Dean Watts restored this beauty and even has the original touring luggage that straps in on the shelf behind the seats.
