ASA-Oregon partners with DEQ
In October the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) contacted ASA-Oregon requesting the assistance of ASA member shops in the Bend, McMinnville, Newburg, Salem and Woodburn areas to participate in a national study. Beginning in March the DEQ will be using a remote sensing unit to gather information about vehicle pollution in these communities.

The remote sensing unit will analyze vehicles driving past an infrared sensor that will determine the level of smog-producing matter that is in the car's exhaust. Motorists will receive an almost instantaneous "Your car's pollution -high, medium or low" readout on a digital message board along the roadside.

The program is strictly voluntary and motorists will not receive any citations or be required to make any repairs. When a car receives a "high" or "medium" reading the motorist will contact DEQ, which will provide the motorist with a list of participating ASA member shops. Most shops will offer an incentive to seek the necessary repairs.

The following ASA member shops will participate in the study: In Bend: Happy Danes Auto Repair, Northgate Auto Repair, Wade Bryant's Auto Service; in Woodburn: Pacific NW Transmission, Woodburn Automotive Repair Center; in Salem: AJ's Auto Repair, Economy Plus Auto Repair, Elliotts Auto Service, Keizer Automotive, Meade & Greenlee, P & M Automotive, Oak Park Auto, Superior Auto Service, Valley Specialists and Today's Automotive.
