Online Auctions

You may have heard about the eBay auction Web site - maybe on one of television's morning talk shows, or possibly in The Wall Street Journal. Online auctions are getting a lot of attention in mainstream media as more people use the Internet to buy and sell their products.

The eBay Internet Web site (http://www.ebay.com) is probably the most successful online auction site. With more than one million items for sale in over 1,000 categories each day, eBay offers an impressive selection of new, used and antique merchandise.

Since its inception in September 1995, more than 40 million items have been placed for sale with over 148 million bids made on those items. eBay is the world's largest personal online trading community with more than 600 million page views per month.

To use eBay, free registration at the site is required. Registrants will be issued a username and password. To ensure that all transactions are conducted in a professional manner, there is a feedback process where buyers and sellers can offer positive and negative feedback on each other. Prospective buyers and sellers can then review the information and decide whether or not to conduct business with a specific individual. Customers can place bids for free, but certain fees apply for posting items for sale on eBay.

Net Numbers

6.7 million U.S. adults used the Internet to make a travel reservation in 1998, up from 5.4 million in 1997.
