Knowledge-Sharing Generates Value

Posted 2/14/1998
By Robert Anderson, AAM

Portrait of Bob Anderson Information is now a commodity largely because of the affordable, wide-spread use of the Internet. However, as the well-known author and futurist John Naisbitt puts it, "we are drowning in information but starved for knowledge." Many associations, including the Automotive Service Association (ASA), provide a lot of information for members. Associations also provide forums for knowledge sharing, such as national, state and chapter meetings, that bring together members to openly share their ideas. Whereas information delivery is a one-way flow, this type of two-way communication generates significant value for members and associations because of our mutual quest for knowledge. Technology futurist Daniel Burrus believes so strongly in the value of knowledge for today's business that he recommends associations appoint a chief knowledge officer to draw out and manage knowledge. He also predicts a move away from the Information Age toward the Communication Age.

The ASA just sponsored the International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE) in late 1997, drawing a record 41,000 people involved in collision repair, and interested in information and knowledge. ASA will host its Annual Convention, March 11-15, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. This convention will provide an excellent forum for members to get together to share ideas and wisdom, and create new knowledge and value for themselves and ASA. The agenda includes Mechanical and Collision Division meetings, which offer stimulating discussion topics. In these meetings, attendees are also asked to help identify action items for the divisions to pursue, with the ultimate goal of bettering business and the aftermarket service industry. There are business meetings and management sessions, with ample time allotted to network with other attendees. For additional information on this meeting, call the ASA meetings department (800) 272-7467.

Throughout the year, many of the ASA state and chapter groups also sponsor meetings and conventions. These more regionalized events are a great way to network with people in your area and provide a great deal of information and education. For a list of ASA regional events, visit the ASA Web Site Events Section.

As we begin 1998, I encourage all members to participate in as many association-sponsored meetings, programs and discussion groups as possible. By doing this, you will not only be getting the most value for your membership, you'll help generate new knowledge for yourself, your business and the association.
