Mission: TransmissionPosted 2/17/2003By Denise Caspersen
Latest Industry Stats
An ASA member recently asked how many transmission specialty businesses are in the United States. Transmission business owners currently make up a slight percentage of the Automotive Service Association's membership. While ASA once had a separate division for transmission members, it was incorporated into the Mechanical Division several years ago. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' latest figures, there are 6,673 transmission businesses employing 29,820 individuals and paying an annual payroll of $814,475,000 (an average of $27,313 per employee). The majority, 61 percent (4,097), of specialized transmission businesses employ between one and four employees. Thirty percent (2,015) of businesses employ between five and nine employees. And 7 percent (483) of transmission businesses employ between 10 and 19 employees. Mega transmission shops employing between 20 and 49 employees garner the remaining 1 percent (74). Editor's note: There may be variations in numbers due to rounding to nearest whole percent.
