The Studebaker brothers began as wagon builders in 1852, and by the early 1900s were building automobiles that - like their wagons - were known for quality, reliability and economy. During both world wars, Studebaker built vehicles that were always welcome on the battlefield, and after World War II, the company's future looked bright. Unfortunately, sales declined and our cover car - a 1964 Studebaker Avanti - was a last-ditch effort to save the company. It is one of only 5,000 built and was designed by the famous Raymond Loewy to be a mid-sized combination of family sedan and sports car - with a Fiberglas body, a potent 289-cubic-inch, supercharged V-8 engine, three-quarter-race high lift cam, four-barrel carburetor and caliper disc brakes. The interior featured luxurious vinyl bucket seats, a built-in roll bar and an aircraft-style instrument panel. But this image builder was not enough and the company was out of business by 1966.
